Our Inspiration

Brian McAndrew

Mentor and Inspiration to Our Chairman, Saif Ahmad

McAndrew Leadership takes it's namesake from Brian McAndrew.

Brian was the Executive Chair of Faith Regen Foundation between 2005 and 2013, and of Global One 2015 between 2011 and 2013. In the course of his extensive career in International Development, he has worked on projects in developing countries across the Middle East, the African continent and South East Asia.

Brian has also worked in a diverse range of roles within the Public Sector and has demonstrated exceptional leadership, kindness, and earnestness in every professional setting. He was Deputy Chief Executive of the City of Bradford Metropolitan Council between 1985 and 1987 and Chief Executive of Enfield Council in North London, between 1987 and 1992. Brian is also a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Management and the Institute of Personnel and Development, a Member of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is the former President of the UK Local Government Directors of Personnel.

Brian worked with Saif Ahmad whilst serving as Chief Executive of Enfield Council. Their friendship started with Brian’s invitation to Saif to use his private office as a prayer room. Up to that point this facility not considered to be necessary.

Prior to this he had served ten years ‘on the tools’ as a telephone engineer which had become a family tradition started by his grandfather. Two competitive scholarships took him first to Ruskin and then Trinity College, Oxford, from which he was awarded an MA. It was these very different experiences, his studies and reflections that helped to form his theories and practice of leadership, which later became the inspiration behind McAndrew Leadership. Whilst at Trinity he once surprised his philosophy tutor by appearing for an end of term tutorial on a Friday and on the following Monday being seen supervising a gang laying cable over Maudlin Bridge. This help provided for family of four [later six] children.

After Oxford he joined Bradford City Council Metropolitan as an official having previously been elected as the youngest ever councilor for the central division of Keighley to serve on the West Riding County Council. This experience gave him valuable experience and insights managing the interface between appointed officials and politicians. Bradford Met. Council was the fourth largest Met Council in England and Wales and employed 27,000 people.

He left Bradford to join the London Borough of Enfield as Town Clerk and Chief Executive. On completing his contract with Enfield he created McAndrew Management as an international consultancy.

In his consultancy role he worked in many different countries. His UK work included working as Acting Chief Executive and/or advisor to organisations that were experiencing difficulties with senior managers. His international work included being part of the international team that facilitated and guided the first national and local government elections in South Africa.

Brian gained his knowledge and expertise of the operations, management and governance of organisations by successfully working at all levels.
