Every year, the 5th of September marks the United Nations International Day of Charity, a day to observe and celebrate the role of charity in creating global change.

The UN’s 2030 Agenda recognises that eradicating poverty in all forms is the most significant global challenge, and a critical component of sustainable development. Charity work and civic engagement, such as volunteering and philanthropy, plays a vital role in creating global change, alleviating poverty and contributing to the creation of more inclusive and resilient societies.

The role of charity is immeasurable. In many contexts, charity supplements public services in areas like healthcare, education, housing and child protection, helping to alleviate the profound effects of humanitarian crises. Beyond direct intervention, charity also helps to promote the rights of marginalised and underprivileged communities, raising awareness of global issues, spreading the message of humanity and assisting in the advancement of culture, sport, science and the protection of natural and cultural heritage.

The International Day of Charity

International days and weeks can be powerful advocacy tools, raising awareness and educating the public on issues of concern. The International Day of Charity was therefore established in 2012 by the UN General Assembly with the aim of raising awareness and mobilising individuals, NGOs and stakeholders across the world to help underprivileged and marginalised groups through charitable acts.

The United Nations chose to recognise the 5th of September as the International Day of Charity is the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Mother Teresa was a renowned missionary and nun who devoted her life to helping those in poverty. She was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work to overcome poverty and distress. The celebration of the International Day of Charity not only recognises Mother Teresa’s work but also acknowledges charity work taking place worldwide, raising awareness of global challenges, pushing for collective action, and promoting sustainable development.

On this annual occasion, the UN invites all member states, international and local organisations, NGOs and individuals to commemorate the day by encouraging charitable acts in their communities and raising public awareness of the event. From global organisations to local charities, the International Day of Charity offers a chance for us to participate in and celebrate the powerful work of charity in creating global change and a more equal future. As the International Day of Charity approaches, there are many ways for interested individuals to celebrate. These may include volunteering, donating to a cause, taking part in events, and helping to spread the word about the International Day of Charity.

Participate in the events or spread the word about this day and commemorate the impactful charitable efforts driving global change!
